Biometric Time Tracker
The Time Attendance system developed exclusively by GrayCell Technologies Exports leverages biometrics (finger scan) technology developed by ekey biometric systems, to identify a person. The system does not suffer from any frailties' such as common skin conditions (dry, aged, worn skin, dirt, dust, grease etc.). This is an easy-to-use software system for creating, maintaining, and reporting on employee profiles for any sort of business. It stores all employees that have worked for a company, along with their personal information; hours worked, and even user accounts. Image: Pdf File Icon
Salient features include:
  • Online web-based system, so all an end user needs to use the system is a web browser like Internet Explorer.
  • The system easily and accurately records an employees' check in and check out time. If the employee is not clocked in, the system clocks them in. If the employee is already clocked in, they are clocked out and the information is then stored in a table of time clock records.
  • Instead of employees punching a time-card, they simply swipe their finger.
  • Scalable "time keeping" software to support thousands of users.
  • Extensive reporting that allows for sorting and filtering of the data. The reporting module also displays charts/graphs to visually communicate the result. Reports can be exported to Excel/PDF format.
  • Role based system
Our Objective In today's world were automation is the key to efficiency, the issues plaguing today’s attendance systems are:
  • Majority of these are still very archaic.
  • Undermine the security of the organization
  • Give skewed information about the employees.
Consider a scenario where organization’s timings are 9 am to 5 pm with a 1 hour lunch break in between. Now in contemporary systems
  • Each person is to mark his/her attendance in a separate register manually or using an access card.
  • The entries are not at all fool proof and are susceptible to fudging and manipulation.
  • The number of hours a person has worked is calculated based upon this data. This is further used to calculate an employee’s salary, as a check for performance appraisal and many other parameters related to payroll department of the organization.
  • One other factor that is of the foremost concern is the security aspect of the organization, which is always undermined in modern day manual/card systems. Anyone can impersonate and gain access to the organization’s critical departments. Also, with manual/card systems, it is not possible to track access of employees/visitors to prescribed areas. This again undermines the security of the organization.
To tackle the above issues, the need for an electronic time attendance system making use of the state of the art biometrics technologies was felt given that there are very few players providing complete customizable biometric systems. It was also felt that the product should be scalable to stand out in this niche market. Our main objective was to develop a scalable biometric system that could be customized according to specific needs of the organization. The system should be
  • Easy to use
  • Must be accessible through simply a web browser as a client
  • Ease of enrollment of users
  • Flawless biometric analysis
  • Should be generic so as to be customizable to organizations requirements
  • Use of Thermal Line Finger Scan Technology that
    • Measures the temperature difference of the finger lines
    • Is highly robust(is immune to environment
    • Highest level of security by swiping the finger
    • Use minutiae based algorithm that doesn’t need saving a picture
Biometric Technology used in the product Biometrics is a technique of studying the physical characteristic of a person such as your fingerprint, hand geometry, eye structure or voice pattern. Biometric methods of identification work by measuring unique human characteristic as a way to provide irrefutable proof of identity, for example, finger or iris scanning or dynamic signature verification. The product is designed to solve the issue of employee registration and authentication in an organization. While the above is implemented manually and serves the immediate purpose, aim is to streamline the above process and improve the efficiency of the system through the use of Biometrics technology. For this purpose, latest thermal sensor finger scan technology is used that eliminates the need for storing fingerprints as images. Instead it involves combinational thermal swipe sensors. Each finger is unique and has 30 to 40 minutiae. These are extracted onto a system of co-ordinates during a finger scan and are binary encoded. There is absolutely no need to save or send pictures.. Temperature difference is measured not of finger lines but between the ridges and valleys of the fingers lines. This makes for a robust finger scanning system.

The above (sample) finger scans are used as a template for future authentications. Thus there is no need for access cards, password remembrance etc. The users finger is the key. The finger scanners used are called BIT. These scanners use state of the art Thermal chip of ATMEL (patented) and the algorithms / hardware of ekey biometric systems. Since a "swipe" technology is used (as opposed to "placement" of finger in the case of optical and semi conductor based technologies) no prints are left on the sensor surface which can be potentially misused. The sensor surface does not have to be repeatedly cleaned as the swiping motion cleans the surface of the print as a user swipes. The Sensor surface itself is totally scratch proof and is also bio coated to prevent transmission of germs and infections.

The following is a diagrammatic representation of the methodology that is generally adopted to develop software systems using Biometrics technology. Keeping in view the fingerprint technology used the figure shows fingerprints as biometrics.
